loneliness
Architecture Design by Jerry Yuan
What is the central idea of your concentration?
I explore architectural design focusing on aesthetics and psychological effects rather than functionality. My 3D building models invoke feelings such as loneliness, confusion, fear, and joy using a variety of design principles including juxtaposition, repeated arrangement of shapes, unusual spaces, dramatic lighting, and perspectives, etc. Most of my models were hand built. I include figures to further elicit a more human emotional reaction that one can experience when inside these structures.
Describe how your sustained investigation shows evidence of practice, experimentation, and revision guided by your inquiry.
Starting with a psychological emotion, I researched various architectural components and experimented with how best to express this feeling in my 3-D models. Initially I practiced using specific situation involving architecture that can induce these feelings, whether it be through a dizzying repetition of shapes and symmetry in which one feels vertigo (5), or a distorted, elongated structure evoking acrophobia (7) or color (12). Revisions to include figures was critical to portray emotions.
