What is the central idea of your concentration?
My aim is to shed light on people who collect recyclable cans called “canners.” I researched this population to discover a resilience among them who redeem used bottles and cans as a means of subsistence. Using photography, clay, and digital drawing I exposed the hardships of this lifestyle. I designed tools and necessities to help them, including a can picker-upper, a tent, and a vehicle to help them collect cans and a safety vest.The correlation between this seemingly discarded population and the repurposing of discarded trash is “uncanny.”
